The elemental power of fire has long been linked with the narrative of womanhood. From the flames that consumed those accused of witchcraft to the sacred rituals of the Babaylans, the connection between women and fire is more than a historical footnote of destruction and transformation. It is a complex interplay, mirroring the multifaceted roles women have endured throughout history.
These historical threads linking women and fire are not lost on P-pop girl group G22. AJ, Alfea, and Jaz recognize that their artistry is part of a continuum—a legacy stretching from sacred rituals to rebellious spirits. It is a stark reminder of their message as artists: for women to own their fire!
They're here to burn sh*t up!
Three years into the game, P-pop's female alphas—G22—have carved out their own lane, proving they're not just another girl group. While the industry leans into pastel aesthetics and bubblegum pop, AJ, Alfea, and Jaz are serving something edgier—think studs, leather, and sky-high stilettos. But it's more than just a look. It's an attitude. A purpose.
"We see our role in inspiring change for women by continuing to amplifying their voices and breaking barriers within the music industry," Jaz Shares. "It's not just about celebrating achievements, but about creating opportunities, fostering equality, and encouraging the next generation of women to take the lead. We aim to challenge norms, open doors for more women to thrive, and inspire confidence in their own talent, both in the music world and beyond.
And it's true for the girls. You'll see it in their eyes—these girls want it. They own it. It's clear to them that they are not just making music but rather they're making moves, igniting a fire that's impossible to put out. Their presence alone sends a message: they're here to burn sh*t up!
But like fire, which dims, flickers, and blazes back stronger, the P-pop industry is an unpredictable battleground. The heat of expectations, the pressure to stay relevant—it's not for the faint of heart. Yet, G22 refuses to be extinguished. They take every challenge, every doubt, and turn it into fuel.
"Last 2023 we had a big shift in our group and doubts started to form but we chose to turn the doubts into inspiration so that we can prove to everyone that we can do it," Alfea admits. "...we’re stronger now as three and we believe that we can achieve greater things as three."
Through the crackling embers of uncertainty, G22 keeps the fire alive—burning brighter, hotter, and fiercer than ever. Their journey isn’t just about survival; it’s about setting the stage ablaze for what’s next. And if there’s one thing they’ve proven, it’s that this fire isn’t dying out anytime soon.
Owning Their Fire
Now stepping into a new era, G22 is proving that behind their commanding presence is a movement deeply rooted in women empowerment. They’re not just performers; they’re trailblazers, redefining what it means to be a woman in the industry—and they’re doing that by being fully hands-on with their craft.
“For G22, we are fully in control of our talents, voice, and decisions, standing strong in our identity,” Jaz shares.
With a vision that’s bolder and a presence that’s fiercer, they’re taking charge, proving that they’re more than just performers; they’re a force to be reckoned with.
“We bring our personal style into the group by acknowledging our individual strengths and recognizing each other’s uniqueness when it comes to vocals, dancing, style etc and we really highlight that,”AJ adds.
Alfea also believes that embracing their authentic selves is what makes this era even more exciting. With P-pop gaining global recognition, she sees the uniqueness of each group as a driving force behind its rise.
“P-pop is becoming widely known all over the world, and that’s because all of the groups offer a different flavor to be served and be seen—not only here in the Philippines but now also globally. We, G22, are very hands-on with our artistry, and we show our authentic selves through our music, performances, and style,” Alfea shares.
Passing the Torch
Timely with the celebration of Women's Month, G22’s new era is all about keeping the fire alive—just like their latest single, "Pa-Pa-Pa-Palaban," an anthem of resilience and empowerment. The song is more than just a battle cry; it carries the legacy of the women who came before them—those who fought, burned, and rose again.
From the sacred fires of the Babaylans to the fearless voices of modern women demanding change, G22 is here to make sure that flame never dies.
But for G22, empowerment isn’t just about standing strong alone—it’s about uplifting others and forging a collective strength. “My message (as cliché as it may sound) would be that you are not alone in this world. As a woman, the community is more accepting and warmer than you might think. It's not easy to face your fights alone, and there's nothing wrong with that. But wouldn't it be better to face these ‘women struggles’ together?” Alfea shares.
This era isn’t just about their own journey—it’s a call to every girl who’s ever been told she’s too much, too loud, or too ambitious. It’s a reminder that fire isn’t meant to be tamed—it’s meant to spread. And with every lyric, every performance, and every moment they take the stage, G22 is making sure the flames of women empowerment burn brighter than ever.
Here at Metroscene Mag, this is the story we want to tell—one of power, resilience, and women owning their fire. As we close out Women’s Month, we celebrate the past, present, and future of fearless women who keep the flames burning. And with G22 leading the way, the fire is only getting stronger.
