In celebration of the cherished Filipino Catholic tradition of Simbang Gabi, the Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) has released the world’s longest usable stamp, titled “world’s longest usable postage stamp,” a breathtaking 234-mm-long (9 inches). Designed by Gelo Andres of Renacimiento Manila, the stamp beautifully features historic churches along the iconic Pasig River.
This special issue highlights nine significant churches: Binondo Church, Quiapo Church, Manila Cathedral, Sta. Ana Church, San Felipe Neri Church, San Pedro Macati Church, Guadalupe Church, Pasig Church, and Antipolo Church.
“It is more than a celebration of heritage- but also an invitation to rekindle our shared values of unity and devotion during the most joyous season of the year,” Carlos said about the PHLPost 2024 Christmas Special Stamps.
“As the vibrant hues of dawn light up the Pasig River and its surroundings, so does this stamp illuminate the essence of Christmas: Love, Joy, Peace and Hope,” Carlos added, describing the special stamp. This stamp used 4 color processes for its special embellishments, a blue iridescent ink to make the river stand out, and suprameatal-multilevel embossing to highlight the beauty of the churches.
Simbang Gabi sa Ilog Pasig
The unveiling of the “Simbang Gabi sa Ilog Pasig” postal stamps coincides with the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Manila City Hall Park, Kartilya ng Katipunan, led by PHLPost Postmaster General Luis D. Carlos and Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna. Perfectly timing with the Christmas tree lighting event, the stamp is a love letter to the Philippines’ culture of celebrating all throughout the ber month season until the Feast of the Three Kings in January. The world’s longest usable stamp celebrates and honors the country’s reputation for having the world’s longest Christmas celebration.
With the Pasig River being rehabilitated and restored as an Esplanade or Promenade Park, the stamps aims to raise awareness about cultural and historical treasures and its preservation. This special stamp was released more than a year after a fire destroyed the historic Manila Central Post Office in May 2023.
The Manila Central Post Office, which was strategically built along the Pasig River at Liwasang Bonifacio to receive mail and other packages through the river, is currently under rehabilitation after its unfortunate destruction. Connecting Manila Bay and Laguna Bay, the iconic river became the flow of trade and commerce back in the days, inspiring the 200 pesos special stamp.
Symbolizing the vibrant culture and history of the Philippines, this special edition stamp justifiably reflects the timeless beauty and elegance of these culturally-relevant landmarks. The “Simbang Gabi sa Ilog Pasig” stamp is a testament to the world about Filipinos’ deep and enduring sense of community.
Priced at ₱200, this limited-edition stamp is available exclusively at the PHLPost Office in Manila. It serves as both a tribute to the Pasig River’s rich legacy and a call to honor and preserve this vital historical landmark.
