In a country where individuals often seek government positions to claim leadership, Leni Robredo continues to redefine what it truly means to lead. Despite not showing interest in running for a higher office after the 2022 presidential elections, her recent hands-on approach through the Angat Buhay Foundation in disaster relief efforts following the devastation of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine exemplifies a core characteristic of true leadership: showing up.
More than just a former vice president, Robredo has demonstrated that one doesn’t need a title to make a significant impact.
The hearts of many Pinoy netizens were warmed by her active involvement in relief efforts in Naga City, Camarines Sur. In now-viral photos shared by local resident Egine Oquindo Baral, Robredo, alongside a dedicated team of Angat Buhay volunteers, braved waist-deep floods to deliver essential relief goods to those in need. Baral’s heartfelt caption, “Thank you, Ma'am Leni Gerona Robredo! 🙏🏻,” resonated with thousands, accumulating different reactions and shares.
Angat Bayanihan Network
On the morning following the storm, Robredo activated the Angat Bayanihan Network to coordinate relief operations not only in Naga City but also in surrounding areas severely affected by the typhoon. “We have activated our Angat Bayanihan Network to do relief operations in areas outside Naga which have also suffered the same fate from Typhoon Kristine,” she stated on Facebook, embodying the spirit of bayanihan—a Filipino tradition of communal unity and cooperation.
Leading With Heart
However, while Robredo's efforts are commendable, they highlight a pressing issue: the need for our government to take accountability for its responsibilities. In times of disaster, it is essential for those in power to step up, coordinate relief efforts, and provide support to affected communities. Citizens have the right to demand that their government be proactive and transparent, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently and that those in need receive timely assistance.
