Gian Bernardino the Pop Star We Deserve

From the heart of Manila to the farthest shores, Filipino music is a force to be reckoned with. We’re not just music fans; we're fanatics. Our music scene is packed with raw and undeniable talent that stands out even in international space. We’ve crowned our kings and queens with titles like “Popstar Royalty” and “Asia’s Songbird,” and there is something about it that is so distinctly Pinoy. It is proof that our love for music runs deeper than just a good tune.

The Philippines is a breeding ground for pop stars! How can it not be? We've grown up watching divas and balladers in countless singing contests, from national TV shows to local talent hunts. This has become part of our culture, inspiring dreamers to pursue their own pop stardom. With such a rich pool of talent, it's no surprise that our music scene is thriving. While some may seem born for the spotlight, the truth is that every rising star has poured blood, sweat, and tears into their craft. Their dedication is what truly sets them apart and makes their impact on our culture so profound.

For Metroscene Mag's July double cover, we celebrate the authenticity of our music and the rich culture it fosters. We're spotlighting the legends who've inspired a generation of dreamers to reach for that pop stardom, featuring the one and only Gian Bernardino of Cup of Joe.

Tala, tala, tala

As cliché as it sounds, countless many Filipino artists have expressed their dream of becoming a renowned singer who can inspire others. It’s a statement heard time and again in singing contests. But beyond the familiar words lies a profound aspiration fueled by passion and talent.

Originally from Baguio, Gian Bernardino discovered his voice at the young age of three. While living in Qatar, he participated in singing contests, where his ultimate ambition to become a musician and performer came to be. "That's when I knew I'd forever sing my heart out," he said.

When asked what inspired him to pursue a career in music, Gian shared, “Mainly, it was because of my pursuit of happiness and fulfillment. Growing up, I was made to believe that a career in the arts is one not worth pursuing. But then I realized that arts is one of the most powerful tools of change and enlightenment in the world and I’d be honored to be a part of that movement.” Luckily, Gian saw this vision through, and we are now blessed with his artistry.

Patutunguhan

Fast forward to the present, Gian has made waves in the nation's music scene as part of the five-piece, Baguio-based pop-rock band, Cup of Joe. Alongside Raphaell Ridao, Xen Gareza, Gab Fernandez, and CJ Fernandez, the band has captured the hearts of countless fans—affectionately known as Joewahs—with their infectious sound. Formed in 2018, Cup of Joe has risen to prominence with hits like "Tingin" featuring Janine Tenoso and "Estranghero."

But like many artists, the band's momentum was abruptly halted by the pandemic. When asked about the biggest challenge in their career so far, Gian shared, "It would have to be facing the pandemic after we started the band’s momentum. That was a very difficult time for us as our access to almost everything has been limited."

Luckily, passion and talent are powerful forces. Despite the hurdles, 2024 has been a breakthrough year for Cup of Joe. After becoming the most streamed music group on Spotify Philippines in November of last year, the band reached new heights with their sold-out "Seatbelts On" concert earlier this year. This historic milestone was followed by another incredible achievement as they won Group Artist of the Year at the New Hue Video Music Awards.

Pinoy Popstar Experience

Gian is undoubtedly reaping the rewards of stardom. But beyond the limelight, he finds his greatest fulfillment in something far more profound. “The most rewarding part is our being a part of others’ lives,” he shared. “Aside from being up there with the legends, it really amazes me how our music gets to be an avenue for us to connect with others. This feeling gets intensified whenever we perform in a crowd and they sing our songs louder than us. We’re living for that impact,” he continued.

Artists possess the unique power to mirror human experiences, amplify unheard voices, and spark critical thought through their platforms. Gian wholeheartedly embraces this role. Beyond his musical talent, he recognizes the immense potential of his platform. Never shying away from addressing societal issues, he consistently uses his voice to inform and advocate for causes he believes in — this commitment proves that he is the pop star that we deserve.

“Being on this platform subjects us into being idolized or looked up to by many,” Gian shared: “As I always fight for what, I strongly believe that we should always use our platform wisely. We should use it not only to showcase our talents but to give enlightenment and awareness as well. As artists, we should be the change we want to see in the world.”

Among the vast pool of local talents and the musical heroes we admire, it's refreshing to see an artist like Gian standing out for all the right reasons. His purpose as an artist shines brighter than the blinding lights of fame, proving that his mission and message carry more weight than mere popularity.

Patuloy ang pangarap

Undoubtedly, the Philippine music industry will forever strive for greatness, inspiring countless individuals to chase their pop stardom dreams. For Gian, he leaves this message: “Don’t be afraid to go against the current. The more authentic and personal your art is, the more powerful you become.”

Finding an artist like Gian in this lifetime isn't rare; we see stars rising all the time. But finding an artist like Gian, who speaks his mind, stays humble, and remains true to himself? That's rare. Gian is truly the pop star we deserve.
