The Filipino spirit is intrinsically linked to music. It's a bond as deep as the ocean surrounding our islands. We speak for everyone when we say that every Filipino moment, whether ordinary or extraordinary, is accompanied by a unique soundtrack. Our joys, sorrows, love, and anger find expression in songs— music is the heartbeat of our celebrations.
But more than anything, our love for music runs deep, with singing that often transcends mere hobbies. This passion is evident in the country's countless karaoke bars, in the streets, or even in the simplest gatherings where music unites us all. It's a testament to how music is not just an art form, but a vital thread that weaves together the rich DNA of our culture— reflecting our people's diverse, passionate, and undeniable talent.
For Metroscene Mag's July cover, we’re celebrating the authenticity of our music and the richness of our culture. Alongside Gian Bernardino of Cup of Joe, we’re highlighting the moments that make us all feel like rockstars in our own right.
Salamat Salamat Musika
Admit it or not, Filipinos are practically born with a microphone in hand. From a young age, we're immersed in a culture that celebrates music. Singing competitions dominate Philippine television, radio and even on the streets. Whether through random karaoke sessions that make us feel like our own rock stars in our own living rooms or public performances, this music is deeply ingrained in our identity. This musical environment nurtures a nation of aspiring performers, paving the way for emerging stars like Gian.
We've all grown up with karaoke, and Gian is no stranger to this tradition. "I was a balladeer who loved joining singing contests as a kid," Gian shared. "I was first introduced to karaoke hits popularized by pop stars like Celine Dion, Sarah Geronimo, and Beyoncé." When asked about his early influences, he continued, "In my teenage years, I discovered OPM and fell in love with pop-rock. That's when I started exploring songwriting."
Like many Filipinos, Gian grew up surrounded by the vibrant OPM music scene. "OPM bands that influenced me are Eraserheads, Rivermaya, and Apo Hiking Society. Some international music acts I love are Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Harry Styles, and Benson Boone," Gian shared when asked about his musical inspirations. "But the music act that made the greatest impact on me is OPM icon KZ Tandingan. Her fearless self-expression on stage inspired me to break barriers as well. She's the rockstar I aspire to be," he said.
It is no surprise, then, that destiny has directed Gian into the nation's music scene as a part of the five-piece collective Cup of Joe, alongside Raphaell Ridao, Xen Gareza, Gab Fernandez, and CJ Fernandez.
Ang Himig Natin
OPM, or Original Pilipino Music, has evolved from the classic kundiman to today's rock and indie sounds. But one thing stays true: its pure Filipino spirit. Our music is a mix of everything—soft and tough, loud and quiet. It's real, raw, and relatable. And Gian perfectly captures this essence. He's not afraid to show who he really is, on stage or online. His genuine artistry shines through.
"Ever since I started working on my craft during my younger years, I always felt that the industry lacked representation," He said. "Since then, I knew that I could be one of those artists that could break norms. Anyone can be a rockstar no matter how someone expresses one’s self. If rules demand conformity, I want to be that artist who would bring artistry outside existing boxes." He continued.
Gian remains steadfast on this personal goal of authenticity, "The best thing about building my artistry around authenticity is that I never felt the need to balance the two," he said.
"I always remind myself why I started my craft in the first place: that is to express myself through music and to use my platform to inspire others. It’s about not being pressured by fame but instead using it to raise awareness and create positive influence on my audience."
Pinoy Rockstar Experience
The rise of pop and rock stars has transformed OPM, but its core—authenticity and heart—remains unchanged. Gian challenges the classic rock star image, proving there's no one-size-fits-all formula for success. With Cup of Joe, he's a bold mix of genuine talent, creativity, and champions authenticity— a Rockstar we truly need.
Artists like Gian remind us that we can create our own Pinoy rock star journey by staying true to our dreams and being authentic. "I want to show that no amount of femininity or non-conformity can stop anyone from doing the extremes and from being a rockstar." he shared. I am my own definition of a rockstar and I believe everyone has this ability. Being true to myself and my art is my edge."
True to his words, Cup of Joe has soared to success since their humble beginnings. Their first solo concert, "Seatbelts On!" earlier this year, and their impressive collection of awards and records are proof that authenticity is the key. And they're not slowing down anytime soon. "I just want to keep doing this," Gian shared. "Performing with the band makes me see colors I can’t see when I’m off stage."
As we move forward and experiment with the sounds of our culture, may this timeless music continue to thrive, evolve, and inspire future generations of artists. Gian reminds us all that even if you're just singing karaoke in your living room or anywhere else, you need to start somewhere—you can be your own rockstar. "Don't be afraid to go against the current. The more authentic and personal your art is, the more powerful you become." Think outside the box; perform as if there were no limits.
