Filipino rapper and Sony Music artist WAIIAN bringing new bangers from his latest album ‘WEYAAT?’ With nine tracks on the list, the album hits close to home as he takes inspiration from the ups and downs of his personal life. “Everything inside the album is whatever happened in the last 3 years,” he shared during the Album Release Party at Balcony Music House.
Starting off as an underground artist, WAIIAN confessed that he knew he was already building something with his friends but was not familiar with the other side of the music scene. “I did not know much about record labels and stuff, Sony helped me a lot. They signed me in, and then I signed my friends as well.”
Bits from the Beats
You just know that an album was based on personal stories when the artist could relate to it as much, and WAIIAN is never not bringing his authentic vibes to every drop. What made the songs even more lit is his consistent themes of living life to the fullest while being in tune with the idea that, like music, life’s no exception from the dead air.
WEYAAT? is an unfiltered reminder that it’s valid to pause your creative grind. That being said, consider this album as WAIIAN’s major comeback after a 3-year hiatus to make time for self-reflection and personal relationships.
The song ‘PABLO’ hits different for him. “Doon ko kwinento yung mga hardships ko, the grieving I’ve done the last 3 years,” he said.
Next Stop After WEYAAT?
This 26-year old Bambu DePistola and Kendrick Lamar fan has witnessed the ever-changing nature of hip hop culture and how new artists emerge to push the limit of what the last act did. For him, the contemporary scene is colorful but every artist should be careful in sending out specific messages, especially for younger listeners these days.
Additionally, WAIIAN shares the importance of his community– family and friends– in their role in keeping his idea of living an average lifestyle with normal people instead of being a rap profile. “They help me stay grounded,” said the lowkey yacht rock listener who also helps his friends finish their album.
Although he is dedicated to creating worthy albums, WAIIAN puts the pressure of achieving specific milestones in his music career to the sidelines; what he has right now is pure appreciation of everything, a couple more albums to put out in the world, and an exciting collaboration with a Thailand-based artist.
