Mark Sheehan, the guitarist of Irish pop band The Script, has died aged 46 after a brief illness, the band announced on social media on 14th April. Sheehan, along with frontman Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power, formed the band in 2001.
“Much loved husband, father, brother, bandmate and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness.” The Script said, asking fans to respect the bereaved family’s privacy during the tragic time.
Sheehan leaves behind his wife Reena, with whom he had three children.
Journey with The Script
The band released their self-titled debut album in 2008, becoming number one in both Ireland and the United Kingdom. The album included hits like The Man Who Can’t Be Moved, Breakeven, and We Cry.
From 2010 to 2019, The Script managed to get more U.K. number one albums than any other Irish band. But in 2022, the band’s frontman announced that Sheehan had taken a break from music, missing The Script’s United States tour so that he could spend time with his family.
“It’s his story to tell, but yeah, I guess if I could paraphrase, his children needed a father and his wife needed a husband,” O’Donoghue said, adding that the group was supportive of Sheehan’s decision. He also said they were “a band of brothers” who “stick together no matter what.” He later rejoined his bandmates for a few shows in Ireland.
The music industry mourns
On Twitter, former Westlife singer Brian McFadden described the news as “devastating,” saying “Mark was of the good guys!”
Mikey Graham, former Boyzone singer, also expressed sympathy after hearing the news and said “we lost another young legend of music.”
I can and do understand the pain Glen & Danny are feeling right now and also their families. All my love and support I offer you at this time. You gave the world your music, it will carry you home, Mark,” said Graham, whose bandmate Stephen Gately died in 2009 due to an undiagnosed heart condition.
OneRepublic vocalist Ryan Tedder also said Sheehan was “one of the nicest, most genuine people” he has met.
The Irish culture minister Catherine Martin also commented on Sheehan’s death, which she referred to as a “great shock to music lovers everywhere and to the Script’s legions of fans around the world.”
“My deepest condolences to his family, fellow band members, and friends,” Martin said.
Irish singer Hozier joined the rest of the music industry to send his condolences.
“So saddened to hear about this. Thinking of you all and Mark’s family right now and sending love. Sincere condolences to you all,” he said.
Sheehan and The Script’s lead singer O’Donoghue have been best friends since they were 12 years old and both grew up in Dublin, Ireland.
