Bretman Rock says “The Beauty Industry Became The Sorry Industry”

Singer, songwriter, actor, actress, athlete, activist, and a scientist on the motherfucking side, Bretman Rock, recently announced that he no longer identifies as a beauty influencer and no longer wants to be associated with the beauty industry.

In an interview with Them for his newly released memoir, Rock reflected on his most influential videos, including his first viral video in 2014, and his first palette collaboration with Morphe. However, he feels that the beauty industry has become the "sorry industry" due to the scandals and exposés that rocked followers over the years.

“It just became an ick to me,” he said. “It’s no longer a beauty industry, beauty community. And I use the word ‘community’ very loosely, like my hole.”

The Beauty Industry Became The Sorry Industry

"The girls were not happy with this video," Rock said in the interview, referring to his 2021 livestream video where he announced he was leaving the world of beauty influencing. "Ultimately, I said what I said, and I meant what I said. White people ruined the beauty community, and I'mma go," he added.

Rock's motivation for continuing as a makeup creator was his love for the other creators who inspired him to share interesting makeup tips, products, and skills. However, the frequent scandals and infighting within the beauty community made him feel like he had to leave. "The beauty industry became the sorry industry," he said.

“How are y’all... do not even know how to apologize?” he said. “It’s as simple as addressing what you did, saying sorry, and never doing it again. But you bitches are gon’ cry, make up excuses, not say sorry, and still do the shit you say. The beauty industry became the sorry industry.”

Despite his decision to leave the beauty industry, Rock has made a significant impact online, uplifting Hawaiian communities and Asian Americans with his various television and social media projects.
