A tribute to Jeneven Bandiala: The Fallen Hero of Ateneo

“Sana hindi ‘nyo na po siya dinamay. Tao rin po siya, nagtatrabaho lang” Cristina Mascardo, the bereaved wife of the security guard expressed in the ABS CBN News.

An ordinary busy day in preparation for tomorrow’s graduation turned out to be a nightmare for Ateneo de Manila University. On July 24, Former Lamitan Mayor Rose Furigay, her aide Victor Capistrano, and Ateneo’s Security Guard, Jeneven Bandiala were shot dead by the suspect, Chao Tiao Yumol inside the university’s premises.

Speculations and different reactions flooded on social media. Some netizens even agreed that the suspect’s act of exercising justice was just right. Some expressed condemnation of his vengeful killing. But most, if not all, sympathized with the security guard.

“Tao siya... may pangalan siya. He deserves to be named and recognized. He did beyond what he was supposed to do. And i will not settle for him to be simply named as a “security guard in ateneo” said Jhei Shiee in their Facebook post.

GMA News reported Jeneven Bandiala, the security guard who has been working in Ateneo for four years, died after suffering from one gunshot in his chest and two in his legs.

Bro. Bien Cruz SJ posted his conversation with the other security guards after hearing the news. He said that before he left, one of the guards remarked, "Pero alam mo bro... ginawa niya ang dapat niyang gawin. Ginawa niya ang tama at baon niya yun kung saan man siya ngayon. Di yun mawawala sa kanya. Mas mabuti pa rin gumawa ng kabutihan kaysa kasamaan."

Wilfredo Molles, the operations manager of Megaforce Security Services Corp assured his bereaved family that they will not be running away from their obligations. “Dadalhin daw sa province ang cadaver so we committed to shoulder yung transportation expenses. Ang agency rin sasagot sa any expenses dito sa wake funeral,” Molles said in an interview.

“I urge you to donate to his family but I also pray that you start seeing security guards with much more respect. The same goes with all workers who make our lives easier. Mr Bandiala fulfilled his role in life with the salary he gets by securing you, make sure you become a person for others once you get that diploma.” Paolo De Andres Capino captioned in their post.

The university has opened a donation channel for those who would like to extend their help.
