Tell us something about yourself?
Hi, I'm Roves. I'm a queer visual artist based in Ilocos Sur, Philippines. I am a Capricorn with a Taurus rising and Scorpio moon. My works are mostly contemporary portraits and figures. For me, art is an endless navigation and a journey, that's why I don't want to limit myself with just one particular medium. As I love to explore and combine different types of mediums.
Where do you draw inspiration for your art?
Most of my works are inspired or based on my personal experiences and societal issues regarding women and queer people. Although I began my creative journey drawing fanarts, I ended up making good use of my skills as a way to express myself, convey a message and tell a story. Sometimes my art also takes its inspiration from the songs I listen to, from fashion and clothes, Kpop artists I stan, a certain character or scene from movies and series, and from all that concerns astrology and the universe.
Describe your art style?
I would say my art style is a combination of contemporary and partly surrealism. An exploration and experimentation of positive and negative space, of minimalism and maximalism. Sometimes I would add excessive symbols, sometimes I love it to be simple and straightforward. It's frustrating to find one's own art style, but I suppose my inconsistent art style is MY art style. I'm not even sure if it makes any sense. Haha
Have you always wanted to become an artist?
Always. I'm one of those kids who are always scribbling on their notebooks and doodling on walls. But I wasn't the best one at drawing back then. Some kids are way better than me, but those kids were my inspiration at the time. I remember we were comparing our drawings and their works are more precise based on the reference than mine. It was actually fun.
As the years went by, I continued to hone my skills. And later carried on my passion by taking a course related to art at university. I always wanted to be an artist, but it never really came to my mind to make it a job or a career. But here I am now.
