Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sling rings viewers to the multiversal future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! As Doctor Strange, and Wanda Maximoff, now known as the Scarlet Witch, are sent to realities beyond their own, there’s one constant question throughout the multiverse: is the movie good? Keep reading to find out.
Plot
With the MCU now on its multiversal saga, the plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a fun, universe-spanning experience. As the film brings you to new worlds in the greater Marvel multiverse, you’ll witness new, mind-bending concepts you’ll enjoy in both this film and future MCU projects. So expect some incredible moments that are both new and familiar, but still exciting!
Characters
The writing done for Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch is incredible! Showcasing the relatable sides to two of Marvel’s most powerful characters; you'll easily root for both of them as you witness their triumphs and torments throughout the film.
Aside from Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, the film’s characters are emotionally 2-dimensional. One could argue that they’re merely driving forces leading the main characters towards their goals, not characters onto their own or are just there to satisfy hardcore comic nerds’ theories.
The film would have benefitted from additional running time for the viewers to know more about the other characters aside from the two main leads.
Look and Tone
The look and tone of Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness are some of the best Marvel has to offer! Thanks to the creative stylings of director Sam Raimi, it is a visual experience that both delights and terrifies.
The film looks stunning as it emulates the colorful vibrance of its source material, something ironically absent in many of the MCU’s offerings. Feeling like a 1960s Doctor Strange comic, thanks to spectacular spells and faithfully adapted comic costumes, the visuals are the true highlight of this film.
To further elevate the look of the film, Raimi gives viewers an experience that’s one part nightmarish and one part campy in tone, something he’s best known for doing in his cult classic film series, The Evil Dead Trilogy. Showcasing demonic imagery, painful body horror, cheesy one-liners, and comedy, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is an experience you dare not miss!
Themes
Much like Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness uses its alternate universe concept to full, thought-provoking effect. As the film shows Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch pondering on their roads-not-taken in life and how those choices affect them, you’ll be inspired to do the same with your own life.
Score
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ plot, look, tone and themes are currently the best of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making it an enjoyable, visual experience! However, aside from Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch’s character arcs, the writing for the other characters could be better.
Score: 3.5/5 - Marvel's first horror movie is an exciting cinematic adventure you need to watch today!
