In the beginning, God created Man, and he thought he could micromanage everything— until God made a woman.
Somewhere in a parallel universe, that could be the underlying message of "The Creation," from the book of Genesis in the Bible. Funny enough, in real life, most men find themselves in a constant crusade — not with the snake, but with women.
The rise of women
Women in modern times are now chipping away from the gender biases that our machismo society has created.
Personalities like Malala Yousufzai, Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, and Venus Williams are only some of the great women who paved the way in breaking stereotypes and empowering women to use their voices. Voices that now scare the hell out of men. Why is it so?
A man's ego is bigger than what he can do
According to Psychologist Jay Carter, you can call a man an ass, a jerk, or whatever you call him, and for him, it's acceptable. But once you call him irresponsible or a has-been, he will be devastated. Unline, most women who get stronger and wiser in every challenge they face or whatever words are thrown at them— look at Taylor Swift.
Men are not ready to hand over the reign
The ever-helpful Angel Locsin wasn't spare either from tirades. Despite her non-political affiliation and just voicing her mere disappointments over the government's shortcomings, she was savagely attacked and even red-tagged by no-less than the military. Do you see how cruel men can be? And how afraid they are to see someone doing something out of the ordinary? Locsin's voice sparked many other women (and logical men, too) to air their grievances. This alarmed many politicians, and instead of heeding the call, turn the favor through political slur.
Woman's voice demands changes
Women nowadays use their voices to demand changes and defy the conventional. Throughout history, men tried to limit women's roles in society. When it comes to decision-making, the traditional submission of women is expected. But, when given the chance, women are straightforward to criticize wrongful doing.
Who else should we pick as an example? Award-winning Filipina journalist Maria Ressa, the founder of the independent news site Rappler, is also an amazing woman who has proven that women can do so much more. She has dedicated her life to honor and promoting #MediaFreedom and has become a vocal critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs. This has led to her facing rape threats, racist, sexist, and misogynistic abuse daily since 2016. She is not only attacked for being a journalist. She is attacked for being a woman.
However, like a Pheonix rising from the ashes, Maria Ressa was is the first Filipino to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and, along with Dmitry Muratov, is the first working journalist to win this award since the 1930s
Presidential candidate Leni Robredo is also a one tough woman to be admired. Robredo stood against male candidates who had previously held positions in the national government and has risen victorious in her leadership. Robredo has shown courage and strength in many stages of her run as the Vice President of the country, including when she would “face off” against President Duterte's inappropriate remarks about women.
But moreover, action speaks louder, and her work as the Vice President of the country has proven her ethics and moral. During the pandemic, Robredo has come up with effective COVID-19 programs, such as Bayanihan E-Konsulta, Vaccine Express, Swab Cab and medical assistance that has helped a lot of communities. Also in 2021, ror the third consecutive year, the office of Vice President Leni Robredo received the highest audit rating from the Commission on Audit — proving that her leadership has no corruption.
Listening to the voice of women guarantee the chance that everyone is being heard, regardless of status, race, and sex. Men in power don't want that to happen. Women's voices should be heard, especially when men are trying to mess things out— look out our dear country.
