On another episode of foreigners doing pinoybaiting.

Nas Daily’s Nas Academy is under fire today for featuring traditional tattoo master Whang-od on one of its online courses without her permission, yikes!

The online learning platform created by Nas Daily, aka Nuseir Yassin, has taken down the course offering after Whang-od’s grandniece and successor, Gracia Palicas, showed her frustrations on a now deleted Facebook post, where she called the academy a “scam.” She also shared that Whang-od was unaware of her participation in the said course and did not sign any contracts with Nas Daily in the first place.

Although the intention of Nas Daily was good, Palicas believed that the course is just a great example of exploiting and profiting the legacy of Whang-od and also their culture and traditions.

Whang-od, aka Maria Oggay, is considered to be the last and oldest (104 years old) mambabatok of Kalinga. She was awarded the Dangal ng Haraya by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) last 2018.

Nas Academy had previously announced the participation of the renowned tattoo artist last June alongside a line-up of other courses from Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray, journalist Jessica Soho and chef and vlogger Erwan Heussaff and many more. The platform aims to deliver world class learning for the creator economy.

The course entitled “Learn The Ancient Art of Tattooing will actually reveal Whang-od’s rituals, tools and methods for making traditional tattoos. For the price of P750, students can have a lifetime access to all the course offerings. Nas Academy also revealed that their team had paid time to travel in Kalinga for two days to visit and invite Whang-od to join the class.

Nuseir Yassin has been a household name on Facebook as the founder of the Nas Daily page. With over 20 million followers, the Israeli vlogger shoots a one-minute long video daily to share his traveling experiences in a span of 1000 days.

Finally after long exploiting and milking over poor countries for clout and money, Nas Daily can gag now. Here are some of the reactions on Twitter-verse:

Neither Nas Daily nor the Nas Academy have yet to release any statements regarding the course and the participation of Whang-od.
