TBH, Black Widow is a good film but the action is underwhelming

After 10 years, and a global pandemic, Black Widow finally has a movie!

“Black Widow” has finally arrived in theaters after what seemed like an almost exhausting pushebacks thanks to COVID-19. With that, I would like to share with you my Black Widow review based on its plot, characters, action, and its message.

Plot: Palette cleanser from Marvel

Set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, “Black Widow” gives viewers an interesting tale about Natasha Romanoff’s story while on the run. I think the story’s pretty good!

In a world filled with androids, aliens, and wizards, it’s nice to have a change of pace with a more grounded story, and an unenhanced human protagonist. Another great thing about this movie is how it finally gives Black Widow’s origin story, an explanation of what drives her, and a look at one of her infamous reds in her ledger.

By leaning into a world of spies, lies, and espionage, Black Widow manages to give viewers an entertaining, and sometimes historically informative, palette cleanser from Marvel’s more sci-fi/fantasy stories.

Characters: Two sides of a coin

The interaction between the lead characters was the highlight of the film. Everyone has something fun and interesting to say and do, and each of them has a distinct personality that makes their dialogue interesting to listen to and believable!

A personal favorite of mine is Yelena Belova. A sarcastic, intelligent, yet vulnerable character, Yelena brings the heart of the film as she shows the viewers what a lifetime of lies can do to a person, especially a young girl. I’m honestly very excited to see her pop-up more in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!

Action: Honestly, really underwhelming

The action in this movie is honestly really underwhelming. As a movie with one of the greatest trained fighters as its lead, and a villain who can copy all of the Avengers’ fighting styles, you would expect more exciting fight scenes! Emphasis on MORE.

The fight scenes were so few and far between that, it left me unsatisfied to see how short and underwhelming most of them are. In my opinion, this was shown the worst with Red Guardian and Taskmaster’s battle. As one of my most anticipated fights in the film, I was really disappointed in how short it was and lacked any style and excitement.

Message: Wait. What? That’s it!?

This movie is an American Propaganda film. Black Widow shows its viewers America’s belief that Communism and Russia hate freedom and that they want to take over the world. The film says that only through Capitalism and America can the world truly be free.

Personally, this never really bothered me. Movies always have the writer’s politics in them, so I’ve taught myself how to respect it over the years, even if I don’t necessarily agree. However, if you tend to agree with liberal beliefs, you might see the film in a different light.

With its great plot and interesting characters, Black Widow is definitely one of the MCU’s best movies in recent years. I’m giving it a 3.5 Stars out of 5.
