After Trese, These Filipino komiks deserve their own animated adaptation

Trese, to say the least, has been a huge success ever since its debut on Netflix. It also reminded everyone that our local culture and art are worth being proud of and are worthy of the world stage.

Now that one of the most popular Filipino komiks of all time has been adapted into a TV series, we gotta ask: What are the other komiks out there that deserve their own adaptations? If you’ve been wondering the same, we’ve compiled a list of Filipino komiks that should have their share of the TV or movie spotlight!

Doorkeeper

Can’t get enough of Philippine mythology? Then Lee Scott Chua and Ethan Chua’s Doorkeeper is one graphic novel you should hope will get its own adaptation!

Doorkeeper blends Philippine folklore and history together with science fiction. The graphic novel features six stories which center around the “doorkeeper,” the guardian of time and space. The story follows the doorkeeper as the immortal being appears in multiple important points in our local history, meaning different individuals along the way that make him question his existence. Read it here.

Pasig Unbound

Ever imagined what a post-apocalyptic Pasig City would look like? That’s something we think would be cool to see on TV or in the movies.

Written by Melvin Sumangil Calingo, also known as Taga-ilog, Pasig Unbound follows the story of Mina, a newbie bounty hunter, who returns to Pasig to look for her first catch. Things are never really simple, especially in post-apocalyptic Pasig, so trouble ensues when Mina runs into someone who’ll complicate her mission. Read it here.

Stay: 21 Comic Stories

Judging by the title, you can already tell that this comic series contains 21 stories. Writer Angelo R. Lacuesta works with a different artist for each story. Each story is also about a different theme, including love, sex, identity, and even death.

Time frame-wise, it’s also varied. One story can be set in the past, another in present, and yet another in the future. You never really know what you’ll get with each of these wonderful 21 tales. Buy it here.
