In case you’ve been living under a rock since June 1, June happens to be Pride Month. And while upholding and respecting LGBT rights shouldn’t be limited to just one month in a year, Pride Month highlights the stories, triumphs, and even struggles of the community.
As we continue to celebrate Pride Month, we give you a list of LGBT+ documentaries you can stream on Netflix. They’re tales of courage, fear, triumph, and even failure that deserve to be heard and known, both by those in the community and those out of it.
A Secret Love
Is it possible to hide a lesbian relationship for almost 70 years? As A Secret Love will show you, yes, it is. The documentary shares the story of All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player Terry Donahue and wife Pat Henschel, who ran an interior design business together while keeping their relationship a secret from friends and family.
All in My Family
This short documentary film tells the tale a of gay Chinese director Hao Wu, who chose to have children with his partner via a surrogate. It chronicles the journey to parenthood for Hao Wu and the long, often difficult road of acceptance for his very traditional family.
Disclosure
The media plays a very huge role in how we see and understand things around us. Disclosure tackles the effect of Hollywood’s portrayal of transgender people on the lives of actual transgenders as well as the American culture in general. It features prominent transgender people such as Laverne Cox, Chaz Bono, and Alexandra Billings.
The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson
Marsha P. Johnson was a gay liberation activist who was believed to have committed suicide after her body was found floating in the Hudson River in 1992. Not everyone believes in the police’s ruling, however, and the documentary follows fellow activist Victoria Cruz as she investigates her friend’s death.
The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin
If you’re familiar with any of the nine novels in the Tales of the City series, then you’d know that Armistead Maupin is the author of the series. The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin follows the life of the author as he went from being a closeted gay with conservative roots to being a champion for the LGBT community. And if you haven’t read Tales of the City just yet, we suggest that you do.
