Celebrate Women's Month by watching these eye-opening documentaries on Netflix

Most of the time, you don't have to look far and long to find a movie, TV series, or even music that's sexist and unfair towards women. But if we all look close enough, there has also been a growing number of media being produced that aims to highlight women's stories.

To celebrate Women's Month, here's a rundown of the different documentaries on Netflix that share the stories of beautiful, strong, empowered women.

#AnneFrank - Parallel Stories

The Holocaust will always be one of the darkest points in history, and one young lady named Anne Frank was able to tell her story through a diary she left behind. The documentary #AnneFrank - Parallel Stories retells Anne Frank's story alongside the experiences of five Holocaust survivors who were young girls just like her at that time.

Athlete A

In 2016, one of the biggest sports scandals erupted when several American female gymnasts accused longtime USA Gymnastics national team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual assault. Athlete A documents how the abuse was exposed by a group of investigative journalists and, more importantly, how the gymnasts who have been abused as minors fought back against their abuser.

Becoming

Everyone knows that Michelle Obama is, as Barack Obama's wife, the former first lady of the United States. But what does it exactly mean to be the first lady, and who else is Michelle Obama beyond her role as FLOTUS? These are exactly what the documentary, which is partially based on a memoir of the same name, focuses on, giving the viewer an in-depth look at the work of Mrs. Obama throughout her tenure as the first lady.

Daughters of Destiny

This four-part docuseries tells the tale of five young girls from India about to attend a boarding school. The series takes place over the course of seven years and follows the journey of these ladies as they work for a better future for themselves despite coming from the most impoverished backgrounds.

The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo

Not all women's stories about strength and courage end with a happy ending. Such is the case with the documentary The Three Deaths of Marisela Escobedo. The documentary narrates a Mexica mother's brave, relentless journey to jail her 16-year-old daughter's murderer. You can probably guess how it all ends, but it shouldn't take away from the fact that a mother's love knows no bounds and absolutely no fear.
