Portrait of an Artist as Filipino
The original black-and-white film in English-language was directed by the National Artist for Film Lamberto V. Avellana. It featured exceptional artists from the '60s, including Daisy H. Avellana, Naty Crame-Rogers, Vic Silayan, and Conrad Parham.
The story was set in the pre-World War II Intramuros, Old Manila, in October 1941. It follows the story of a great yet impoverished painter, Don Lorenzo Marasigan, and his two daughters, Candida and Paula, who are dealing with the ravages of poverty. The film's central theme focuses on maintaining Filipinos' cultural identity under the influence of Western ideals. It also explores the concept of family conflict and many aspects of the Philippine high society during that time.
